How to Measure for Curtain Panels

  • Measure the rod width: Measure your curtain rod from bracket to bracket. This is your bracket width.
  • Measure the rod circumference: Measure around the curtain rod to determine its thickness. This is important for rod-pocket curtains.
  • Measure the desired length: Measure from the bottom of the rod to where you want the curtain to end (sill, apron, or floor).
  • Choose your fullness ratio: Standard fullness is 2x the window width. Use 1.5x for minimal gathers or 3x for luxurious fullness.
  • Note your fabric width: Most decorative fabrics come in 54-inch widths, but always check your specific fabric.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator uses a two-step process. First, it determines the total fabric width needed by multiplying the bracket width by the fullness ratio and adding 2 inches for side seams. This total width is divided by the fabric width to determine how many fabric widths are needed per panel.

Next, it calculates the length per panel based on curtain type:

  • Rod Pocket: Length + 8.5" + (rod circumference / 2) — allows for bottom hem, top ruffle, and rod pocket.
  • Grommet / Eyelet: Length + 10" — allows for bottom hem and top hem with grommets.
  • Pleated Panel: Length + 10" — allows for bottom hem and pleat construction.
  • Tab Top (Cuffed): Length + 1.5" — minimal allowance since tabs are separate.

The total fabric needed is the length per panel multiplied by the number of fabric widths and the number of panels. The result is shown in both inches and yards.

The fullness ratio determines how much fabric is used relative to the window width. A ratio of 2 means the fabric width is twice the window width, creating standard gathers. How do I determine the number of curtain panels needed?
