Color Name Lookup
Find the closest CSS named color for any hex, RGB, HSL, or HWB value. See the top 10 nearest matches ranked with CIEDE2000 color distance, plus a browsable list of all 148 CSS named colors.
What the Color Name Lookup Does
The Color Name Lookup finds the closest CSS named color for any color you enter. Paste a hex code, an rgb() or hsl() value, or an hwb() value, and the tool ranks the ten nearest matches from the 148 CSS named colors using the CIEDE2000 color difference formula. The top result appears in a summary card with a swatch, and each match in the list shows its name, hex value, and distance score.
This is useful when you have a specific color from a brand guide, a screenshot, or a design file and want to know whether a named color like coral, steelblue, or papayawhip is close enough for readable, self-documenting CSS.
How to Use the Color Name Lookup
- Enter a color in the input, or pick one with the color swatch.
- Read the closest CSS color name and its CIEDE2000 distance in the summary card.
- Review the top 10 list to compare alternatives and their hex values.
- Click Browse all 148 CSS colors to filter the full list by name or hex.
- Click any color in the list to load it into the lookup.
How Color Distance Works
Simple RGB distance treats all channel differences as equally important, which does not match how people see color. The CIEDE2000 formula instead measures distance in the CIELAB color space, where equal numeric steps correspond much more closely to equal perceptual steps. A distance of 0 means an exact match, values below 1 are effectively indistinguishable to the human eye, values around 2 are noticeable only on close inspection, and values above 10 read as clearly different colors.
The formula also corrects for known weaknesses of older measurements in the blue region and with low-saturation colors, which is why it is the standard in print, paint, and manufacturing workflows.
CSS Named Colors and Their Quirks
CSS supports 148 named colors that you can use directly in stylesheets without any hex conversion. The list grew out of the X11 color set from Unix windowing systems, so some names are famously counterintuitive. In CSS, darkgray (#a9a9a9) is lighter than gray (#808080), and both lime (#00ff00) and green (#008000) exist while "lightblack" does not. Several colors have two spellings: gray and grey, slategray and slategrey, and so on. Both spellings are valid, and this tool lists all of them.
For conversion between hex, RGB, HSL, HWB, and CMYK, the Color Converter handles every common format. If you are checking whether text remains readable on a color, the Color Contrast Checker measures WCAG ratios.
When to Use Named Colors
- Prototypes and demos: names like tomato, steelblue, and salmon are faster to type than hex codes and read clearly in code review.
- Teaching and documentation: background: lightcoral is easier to understand in an example than background: #f08080.
- Debugging: temporary highlight colors such as tomato or limegreen make layout issues obvious.
- Production design systems: prefer tokens or hex values for exact brand colors, and use names as readable fallbacks.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many CSS named colors are there?
148 names are defined in the CSS Color Module, including common colors like red and blue, the grey and gray spelling variants, and rebeccapurple. All of them are included in the browse list.
What does the ΔE value mean?
ΔE (delta E) is the CIEDE2000 distance between your color and the named color. A value under 1 means the difference is essentially invisible, under 2 is very close, and anything above 10 looks like a different color.
Why is the closest name sometimes surprising?
Named colors are not evenly spread across the color space. Large regions have only a few names, so a color that looks like "light blue" to you might be closest to a name like powderblue or lightsteelblue depending on its exact values.
Which input formats are supported?
Hex codes with or without the hash, rgb() and rgba() functions, hsl() and hsla() functions, hwb() values, and all 148 CSS color names.
Should I use named colors in production CSS?
For exact brand colors, hex values or design tokens are safer because named colors cannot be tuned. Names work well for prototypes, examples, and fallbacks where readability matters more than precision.
Is the color difference calculation done on my device?
Yes. Parsing and CIEDE2000 calculations run entirely in your browser, and the color you enter is never sent anywhere.
