Centrifugal Force Calculator
Calculate centrifugal force from mass, angular velocity, and radius in rotating systems.
What Is Centrifugal Force?
Centrifugal force is the apparent outward force on a body moving in a circular path, observed in a rotating reference frame. It is not a real force in an inertial frame — centripetal force points inward to maintain circular motion. In practice, engineers use the centrifugal formulation for rotating machinery and vehicle cornering.
Centrifugal Force Formula
$$F = m\omega^2 r$$\(m\) is mass in kg, \(\omega\) is angular velocity in rad/s, and \(r\) is radius in meters. From RPM: \(\omega = 2\pi \cdot \text{RPM} / 60\).
Example: 10 kg at 100 RPM with 2 m radius gives \(\omega = 10.47\) rad/s and \(F = 10 \times 10.47^2 \times 2 \approx 2{,}193\) N.
Related Quantities
Centrifugal acceleration is \(a = F/m = \omega^2 r\). Tangential speed is \(v = \omega r\). The equivalent formula \(F = mv^2/r\) applies when tangential speed is known directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert RPM to angular velocity?
Multiply RPM by \(2\pi/60\). For example, 60 RPM equals \(2\pi \approx 6.28\) rad/s.
Is centrifugal force a real force?
In an inertial frame, only centripetal (inward) force is needed. Centrifugal force appears when analyzing motion in a frame that rotates with the object.
How does this apply to a turning car?
A car cornering at speed experiences lateral acceleration \(v^2/r\) toward the center of the curve. Tire friction must provide that centripetal force.
What is the difference between F = mω²r and F = mv²/r?
They are equivalent because \(v = \omega r\). Use whichever form matches the inputs you have.
What units should I use?
Mass in kg, radius in meters, angular velocity in rad/s or RPM. Force is in newtons (N).
