How Many Calories Does Your Cat Need?

The Cat Calorie Calculator uses the veterinary-grade RER (Resting Energy Requirement) formula to determine your cat's daily calorie needs. Simply enter your cat's weight, select the appropriate life stage, and get an immediate recommendation for daily caloric intake and feeding amounts.

The Science Behind Cat Calorie Calculation

The calculation uses a two-step process. First, the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is calculated using the formula:

$$ \text{RER} = 70 \times (\text{body weight in kg})^{0.75} $$

This represents the calories needed for basic bodily functions at rest. Next, the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) is calculated by multiplying the RER by a life-stage factor:

$$ \text{MER} = \text{RER} \times \text{Life Stage Multiplier} $$

Life Stage Multipliers

Life Stage Multiplier Example (4.5 kg cat)
Kitten (under 4 months)2.5x~545 kcal
Kitten (4-12 months)2.0x~436 kcal
Neutered/Spayed Indoor1.2x~262 kcal
Intact Adult1.4x~305 kcal
Active/Outdoor1.6x~349 kcal
Senior (11+ years)1.1x~240 kcal
Overweight/Weight Loss1.0x~218 kcal
Pregnant2.0x~436 kcal
Lactating (Nursing)2.5x~545 kcal

Tips for Feeding Your Cat

  • Measure portions: Use a kitchen scale or measuring cup rather than eyeballing portions.
  • Account for treats: Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories.
  • Multiple small meals: Cats naturally eat 10-20 small meals per day.
  • Wet food for weight management: Wet food has lower calorie density and can help cats feel full.
  • Regular weigh-ins: Weigh your cat monthly and adjust portions accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does my cat need per day?

A typical neutered indoor cat weighing 4-5 kg needs about 200-260 calories per day. The exact amount depends on age, activity level, and whether the cat is neutered or spayed. Use our calculator above for a personalized recommendation.

What is RER for cats?

RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the number of calories a cat needs at rest for basic body functions like breathing and circulation. The formula is RER = 70 x (body weight in kg)^0.75.

How much wet food should I feed my cat?

A standard 5.5 oz can of wet cat food contains about 200-250 calories. For an average 4.5 kg neutered indoor cat needing about 260 calories per day, that is roughly 1 to 1.2 cans daily. Always check the calorie content on your specific food brand.

Do kittens need more calories than adult cats?

Yes, kittens need significantly more calories per body weight. Kittens under 4 months need about 2.5x their RER, while 4-12 month kittens need about 2x their RER to support rapid growth and development.

How do I help my cat lose weight safely?

For safe weight loss, feed your cat at 80% of the RER calculated for their ideal weight. Never reduce calories by more than 20-30% at once. A healthy rate of weight loss is 1-2% body weight per week. Always consult your veterinarian first.
