Cake Serving Calculator
Find the right round, square, or sheet cake size for your guest count and preferred slice size.
How Much Cake Do You Need?
Party size depends on guest count, cake shape, and slice size. This calculator estimates the round, square, or sheet cake you should order or bake. Use it with the Cake Pricing Calculator and Baking Pan Size Converter.
Slice Area Method
Multiply guest count by slice area to get the top surface you need. For a round cake, diameter comes from $A = \pi (d/2)^2$. For a square cake, side length is $\sqrt{A}$.
Sheet Cake Sizes
Common sheet sizes are quarter (13" × 9"), half (18" × 13"), and full (26" × 18"). The tool picks the smallest sheet that fits your guest count at the slice size you choose.
Two-Tier Recommendation
For larger parties, a single round layer can become very wide. When guest count reaches about 50 or the recommended diameter hits 14 inches, the calculator suggests a two-tier cake instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
What slice size should I use?
Wedding-style portions are often 1" × 2". Party slices are commonly 2" × 2". Adjust the slice width and length fields to match your event.
How many people does a full sheet cake feed?
A 26" × 18" sheet has 468 in² of top area. With 2" × 2" slices, that is about 117 servings before trimming loss.
Does cake height change serving count?
Taller wedding cakes use smaller slices. This tool focuses on top surface area, which is the usual way bakeries quote serving counts.
Why does the tool round cake sizes up?
Bakeries sell even-inch pans, and rounding up adds a small buffer so you do not run short on slices.
