An IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is the 15-digit identifier cellular networks use to recognize a physical phone or modem. Developers search for an IMEI generator when they need Luhn-valid test data for forms, APIs, MDM mocks, and inventory imports without copying a customer's real device ID. This guide explains the official IMEI layout (GSMA / 3GPP), how the Luhn check digit works, legal testing workflows, and how to generate synthetic IMEIs in your browser with our free Random IMEI Generator. Numbers from online generators are fixtures only: they do not prove a device exists and must never be used to clone hardware, unlock stolen phones, or bypass carrier controls.

Key facts: IMEI numbers and generators (quick reference)
Use this block when you need a concise answer for search or AI summaries:
- IMEI length: Standard IMEI is 15 digits (all decimal). Dual-SIM phones expose two IMEIs. IMEISV adds a software-version field and is used in different network procedures (16 digits total in the IMEISV structure).
- Structure: 8-digit Type Allocation Code (TAC) + 6-digit serial number + 1-digit Luhn check digit (3GPP TS 23.003, GSMA TS.06).
- TAC meaning: The first two TAC digits are the Reporting Body identifier; the remaining six identify the device model. Real TACs are allocated by GSMA reporting bodies, not guessed by test tools.
- Check digit: Computed from the first 14 digits with the Luhn formula. Validation catches typos; it does not prove carrier registration, warranty status, or that the phone is genuine.
- Where to read IMEI: Dial
*#06#on many phones, or open Settings → About phone. The number is also printed on the device box and sometimes on the SIM tray. - IMEI generator use cases: Populate staging databases, test regex and form validators, mock REST responses, train support staff, and document API schemas without real customer identifiers.
- Prohibited uses: Changing a device's IMEI (IMEI rewriting), registering synthetic IDs on live networks, fraud, or evading stolen-device blocklists. Laws vary by country; misuse can be criminal.
- Official test IMEIs: Manufacturers may receive GSMA Test IMEI allocations for prototype devices on live networks under strict rules and often with operator permission (GSMA TS.06). That is separate from random online generators.
- Privacy: Our Random IMEI Generator runs in the browser. Generated lists are not uploaded for server-side storage.
What is an IMEI number?
The International Mobile Equipment Identity ties a piece of cellular hardware to billing, fraud prevention, device management, and national type-approval programs. Mobile network operators (MNOs) use IMEIs in the Equipment Identity Register (EIR) to allow or deny network access. Regulators in some markets require approved TACs before import. Manufacturers assign unique serials within each TAC so no two shipped units share the same 15-digit code.
Common reasons people look up IMEI format or search for a generador de IMEI / IMEI generator Infinix style tool:
- App development: Mobile apps read IMEI or related identifiers on older Android APIs; you still need valid-shaped test strings when real hardware is unavailable.
- Backend validation: Inventory APIs reject non-numeric input, wrong length, or failed Luhn checks before a record is saved.
- MDM and logistics mocks: Simulate enrollment payloads, RMA tickets, or warehouse scans in Jira/ServiceNow demos.
- Education: Teach checksum algorithms alongside credit card Luhn examples (same family of check digits, different field rules).
- Support playbooks: Show agents what a valid IMEI looks like without exposing a customer's device on a shared screen recording.

IMEI structure: TAC, serial number, and check digit
GSMA document TS.06 and 3GPP TS 23.003 define the decimal IMEI used on 3GPP networks:
- Type Allocation Code (8 digits): Identifies model and reporting body. One TAC supports up to one million serial numbers; high-volume models may receive additional TACs.
- Serial number (6 digits): Assigned by the manufacturer within the TAC range. Each unit must be unique for that TAC.
- Check digit (1 digit): Derived from the previous 14 digits via Luhn. When the MS transmits IMEI over the air, the check digit may be handled separately per spec; for human-readable forms you usually see all 15 digits together.
Example layout (illustrative only): 35 890123 456789 2 groups as TAC 35890123, serial 456789, check 2. Real TACs for a brand are published through GSMA processes; do not assume a random prefix matches a retail SKU.
How the IMEI Luhn check digit is calculated
The IMEI check digit follows the Luhn algorithm (also used on many payment card numbers, with different length rules). Steps for the first 14 digits:
- Write the 14 digits left to right. Double every second digit (positions 2, 4, 6, … from the left).
- If doubling yields a two-digit number, add its digits (equivalent to subtracting 9 when the result is between 10 and 18).
- Sum all resulting digits.
- The check digit is
(10 - (sum mod 10)) mod 10.
After generation, verify fixtures with our IMEI Validator or unit tests that strip spaces and dashes before validation.
Real IMEI vs random IMEI generator output
| Aspect | Factory / GSMA IMEI | Online IMEI generator |
|---|---|---|
| TAC source | Allocated to a specific model via reporting body | Random or themed prefix; not a licensed GSMA database export |
| Uniqueness | Globally unique per shipped device | May theoretically collide with a real assignment; treat as disposable test data |
| Luhn validity | Always valid check digit | Valid check digit by design |
| Network activation | May register on carrier if device is approved and not blocked | Must not be used for activation, unlocking, or blacklist checks |
| Typical use | Production hardware, warranty, lawful intercept compliance | QA, staging, API mocks, training, parser tests |
Method 1: Generate IMEI numbers online (Random IMEI Generator)
The fastest path for Luhn-valid synthetic IMEIs is our browser-based Random IMEI Generator. It builds 14 random digits (optionally prefixed by a manufacturer profile), appends the Luhn check digit, and lets you copy or download results.
- Open the Random IMEI Generator tool.
- Set Quantity (1–100) for how many identifiers you need in one batch.
- Choose Manufacturer or leave Random for mixed prefixes. Profiles such as Apple, Samsung, Infinix, and Tecno fix the opening digits for themed test scenarios; they are labels for QA, not proof of model authenticity.
- Enable Include dashes if your spec expects grouped display (for example
35-890123-456789-2style grouping). - Pick Export Format Text or JSON for fixtures.
- Click Generate IMEI, then copy from the output panel or download
imeis.txt/imeis.json.
Brand-specific landing pages (for example random IMEI for Infinix or Tecno) use the same engine with the manufacturer preset selected. Keep exported files labeled TEST_IMEI in git and CI secrets scanners.
Alternative methods
Spreadsheet or script (Node.js / Python)
Teams with existing data pipelines often generate IMEIs in code:
- Node.js: Loop random 14-digit strings, implement Luhn on digit arrays, push to JSON Lines for load tests.
- Python: Use
random.randintfor digits and a small Luhn function; export CSV for pytest parametrization. - SQL: Some teams store precomputed pools in migration seeds; still mark rows as synthetic.
Scripting wins when you need millions of rows or deterministic seeds. The online tool wins for ad hoc manual QA without opening an IDE.
Reading IMEI from a physical device
- Android: Settings → About phone → IMEI (wording varies by OEM).
- iPhone: Settings → General → About → IMEI, or SIM tray engraving on older models.
- Modems / routers: Sticker on housing or AT command reference (vendor-specific).
Never paste a customer's production IMEI into public tickets, chat logs, or analytics. Use generated substitutes in documentation screenshots.
GSMA Test IMEI (manufacturers only)
Prototype handsets that need live-network trials may use GSMA Test IMEI allocations under TS.06. Those identifiers are traceable, controlled by the manufacturer, and not sold to consumers. Consumer-facing IMEI generator sites are unrelated to that program.
Responsible testing workflows
- Isolate environments: Staging databases should refuse connections to carrier OSS/BSS APIs when the IMEI row is flagged synthetic.
- Validate input rules: Test length 15, digits only, optional dash stripping, leading zeros, and rejection of IMEISV when your API expects classic IMEI.
- Negative tests: Feed 14-digit strings, letters, and invalid Luhn sums to confirm HTTP 400 paths.
- Do not call blacklist APIs with generated values; you waste quota and may leak test patterns.
- Compliance training: Document that Luhn pass ≠ device is clean, unlocked, or financed.
Tips and common mistakes
- Confusing IMEI with IMSI: IMSI identifies the SIM subscriber profile; IMEI identifies the radio hardware. Dual SIM can mean two IMEIs and two IMSIs active.
- Confusing IMEI with serial number on box: Retail serials (S/N) are manufacturer-specific and may not equal the 6-digit IMEI serial field.
- Assuming TAC from brand name: Multiple TACs exist per brand across regions and refreshes. Only GSMA allocation data is authoritative.
- Storing IMEI in plain text logs: Treat real IMEIs as sensitive device identifiers under GDPR-style policies; use synthetic values in sample log bundles.
- Using generators for "free unlock" scams: Legitimate unlocking requires carrier or OEM processes. Random IMEIs cannot unlock a phone.
- Formatting: Strip spaces and dashes before validation. Some APIs accept only
^\d{15}$.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IMEI number used for?
IMEI identifies cellular hardware on mobile networks. Carriers use it for provisioning, fraud detection, stolen-device blocking, and targeted software updates. It is not a substitute for a SIM card or user account.
Is it legal to use an IMEI generator?
Generating synthetic, Luhn-valid numbers for software testing, education, and staging is generally acceptable when you do not use them to impersonate real devices, rewrite hardware IDs, or evade law enforcement blocklists. Laws differ by jurisdiction; IMEI tampering is illegal in many countries.
Does a valid Luhn check mean the IMEI is real?
No. Luhn only validates the checksum. Random generators and hand-typed numbers can pass Luhn without corresponding to a manufactured phone. Carrier and GSMA databases are required to confirm real-world assignment.
How is an IMEI different from IMEISV?
Classic IMEI is 15 digits with TAC, serial, and check digit. IMEISV extends the structure with a software version field for network procedures that need to track firmware revisions. APIs must document which format they expect.
Can I generate Infinix or Tecno style IMEI numbers for testing?
Yes, for local QA. Select the Infinix or Tecno manufacturer preset in the Random IMEI Generator to fix themed leading digits, then export text or JSON. These are synthetic fixtures, not issued by GSMA, and must not be submitted to carrier activation or blacklist services.
Understanding IMEI structure separates legitimate QA from risky misuse. For day-to-day test data, open the Random IMEI Generator, batch the quantity you need, validate samples with the IMEI Validator, and keep synthetic rows out of production identity systems. For real devices, read IMEI only from the phone or its packaging and handle it as sensitive customer data.
