What Is a Pipe Weight Calculator?

A pipe weight calculator estimates the mass of a hollow pipe from material, outer diameter, wall thickness, and length. It also returns linear density (weight per foot or meter) for ordering and structural planning with steel, PVC, copper, aluminum, and other alloys.

Pipe Weight Formula

Pipe material volume is the difference between outer and inner cylinders:

$$V = \pi \times \left[\left(\frac{D_o}{2}\right)^2 - \left(\frac{D_i}{2}\right)^2\right] \times L$$

Weight from density:

$$W = V \times \rho$$

How do I calculate the weight of a steel pipe?

Find the cross-sectional area of the pipe wall, multiply by length to get volume, then multiply by steel density. Mild steel is about 7.88 g/cm³.

What is pipe linear density?

Linear density is pipe weight per unit length, such as lb/ft or kg/m. Multiply linear density by total length to get weight for multiple identical pipe sections.

How much does a 4 inch PVC pipe weigh per foot?

A 4 inch PVC pipe with 0.25 inch wall thickness weighs about 1.85 lb/ft. A standard 30 foot stick weighs roughly 55.5 lb.

What is the difference between outer and inner diameter?

Outer diameter is the full pipe width including walls. Inner diameter is the hollow opening. Wall thickness equals half the difference between outer and inner diameter.
