A micron ($\mu$m) is a metric unit equal to one millionth of a meter. A mil is one thousandth of an inch, commonly used in manufacturing, coatings, and material thickness specifications in the United States.

Conversion Formula

$$\text{microns} = \text{mils} \times 25.4$$

$$\text{mils} = \frac{\text{microns}}{25.4}$$

Common Examples

• 50 $\mu$m = 1.9685 mil (about human hair thickness)
• 40 mil = 1.016 mm (similar to an ID card thickness)
