Fence Perimeter Calculator
Calculate total fence length for rectangular yards from length, width, area, or gate opening dimensions.
What Is a Fence Perimeter Calculator?
A fence perimeter calculator finds total linear fence length for a rectangular yard. Enter length and width, or area plus one side dimension, and subtract any gate opening to get the footage you need to buy.
Rectangle Fence Perimeter Formula
When you know both sides of a rectangle:
$$ P = 2(L + W) - o $$
Where $P$ is perimeter, $L$ is length, $W$ is width, and $o$ is gate opening width. If you only know area $A$ and one side, use $P = 2(L + A/L) - o$ or $P = 2(W + A/W) - o$.
Pair this with the Fence Calculator for posts and pickets, or the Fence Cost Calculator for pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much fence do I need for a 100 by 80 foot yard?
Perimeter is 2 × (100 + 80) = 360 feet of fence. Subtract gate width if you plan an opening. A 4-foot gate reduces the total to 356 feet.
How many feet of fence for 1 acre?
A square acre (208.71 ft per side) needs about 835 feet of fence. Rectangular acres vary. Enter your area and one side dimension to get an exact perimeter.
How many feet of fence for half an acre?
A square half-acre plot (about 147 ft per side) needs roughly 590 feet of fence. Use area plus length or width for non-square shapes.
Should I subtract the gate from perimeter?
Yes. Gate opening width is not fenced, so subtract it from total perimeter when estimating material length.
Does this work for non-rectangular yards?
This calculator assumes a rectangle. Irregular lots need side-by-side measurements summed manually or a general perimeter tool.
