What Causes a False Negative Pregnancy Test?

A false negative pregnancy test means the test reads negative even though you are pregnant. Home urine tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which rises after implantation. Testing too early, before hCG reaches the test's detection threshold, is the most common cause. Test quality and sensitivity also matter. How hCG Rises After Conception

Implantation typically occurs around 9 days after ovulation. hCG then begins at roughly 5 mIU/mL and doubles about every 48 hours in early pregnancy. Urine tests with 10, 20, or 25 mIU/mL cutoffs need enough hCG in the sample to show a positive line. First-morning urine is most concentrated and often gives the earliest reliable result.

Natural Cycle vs IVF Timing

For natural cycles, ovulation is estimated from your last period and cycle length unless you enter a known ovulation date. For IVF, embryo age at transfer (day 3, 5, or 6) adjusts the equivalent days post ovulation so you can estimate whether hCG should be detectable on your chosen test date.

When to Retest

If you test early and get a negative result but still suspect pregnancy, wait until hCG is expected to exceed your test's sensitivity or until the day after a missed period. Persistent symptoms with repeated negative tests warrant medical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can a urine test show positive?

Many sensitive tests (10 mIU/mL) may detect pregnancy about 10 to 12 days after ovulation. Standard 25 mIU/mL tests are more reliable from about 14 days post-ovulation or after a missed period.

What test sensitivity should I choose?

Check your test packaging for the mIU/mL cutoff. High-sensitivity tests detect lower hCG levels; standard tests often use 20 to 25 mIU/mL. Select the value that matches your brand.

Can I be pregnant with a negative test?

Yes. Testing before hCG is high enough produces a false negative. Retest in a few days or after a missed period if pregnancy is still possible.

How does IVF affect test timing?

After embryo transfer, hCG production depends on implantation, which usually occurs within one to two days for blastocyst transfers. This calculator adjusts for embryo age and days since transfer.

Why use first-morning urine?

hCG is more concentrated in the first urine of the day, improving the chance of detection when levels are still rising early in pregnancy.

Does this calculator diagnose pregnancy?

No. It estimates hCG levels and detection likelihood based on published models. Only a clinical test and provider evaluation can confirm or rule out pregnancy.
