Understanding Your GPA
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance. It's calculated by averaging the grade points you've earned across all your courses, weighted by the number of credit hours each course is worth.
GPA Ranges:
- 3.7-4.0: Excellent academic performance
- 3.3-3.6: Good academic performance
- 3.0-3.2: Above average academic performance
- 2.7-2.9: Average academic performance
- 2.0-2.6: Below average academic performance
- Below 2.0: Academic probation territory
Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing all these values, and then dividing by the total number of credit hours. The formula is: GPA = (w₁×g₁ + w₂×g₂ + w₃×g₃ + ...) / (w₁ + w₂ + w₃ + ...) where w represents credit hours and g represents grade points.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses standard grade point values (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.) for all courses. Weighted GPA gives bonus points for advanced courses like Honors (+0.5), AP (+1.0), IB (+1.0), and College courses (+1.0), allowing students to earn GPAs above 4.0.
How do I calculate what GPA I need to reach my target?
Use our Final GPA Calculator feature. Enter your current GPA, target GPA, and the number of additional credit hours you plan to take. The calculator will show you what average GPA you need to maintain in those future courses to reach your target.
Can I include my previous cumulative GPA?
Yes! You can enter your previous cumulative GPA and credit hours in the "Previous Cumulative GPA" section. This will be combined with your current course grades to give you an overall GPA calculation.
What if I have Pass/No Pass courses?
Pass (P) courses typically count as an A grade (4.0 points) and are included in credit hour totals. No Pass (NP) courses count as 0 points and are not included in GPA calculations. Our calculator handles these automatically.
